John will give an illustrated account of the extraordinary life of W H Davies, poet. W H Davies was born in Newport 1871, at 22 went to USA working on Atlantic cattle ships and rode the rails as a hobo before losing a leg. He lived as a tramp in workhouses, writing poems and attempting to self-publish. After writing his autobiography, Adventures of a Supertramp, praised by George Bernard Shaw, Davies became one of the most popular poets of the time and a minor literary celebrity who knew Huxley, Rupert Brooke,
D H Lawrence, Augustus John, R S Thomas.
Davies died in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire in 1940.
