Clifton Library Welcome Space Wednesday Matinee: ‘Hidden Figures’

March 8, 2023 at 2:00 pm 4:00 pm

Wednesday March 8th is International Women’s Day – this film fits the day perfectly; Three brilliant African American women at NASA – Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson – serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world.

Most of us would have heard about the astronaut John Herschel Glenn Jr. I mean he was the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it threes time, so he is pretty much a big deal! However the story of how this operation was put together involving the brains of three African-American women working at NASA isn’t as well known; that is until now.

Hidden Figures tells an incredible story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. They were all African-American women, and mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA helping America to win the space race in the 1960’s. These three extraordinary women managed to cross all gender and racial lines to inspire future generations like myself to dream big. It just goes to show anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

We are showing this film as part of opening Clifton Library Welcome Space. Therefore this film is a free event.
