POLLY TOYNBEE

POLLY TOYNBEE in conversation with Chris Mullin

November 11, 2023 at 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

Polly Toynbee, political and social commentator for The Guardian, is the former BBC Social Affairs Editor. Twice named Commentator of the Year, she also won the George Orwell prize. Her previous books include studies on manual work, (Hard Work: Life in low Pay Britain), inequality (Unjust Rewards), the record of the last Labour government (The Verdict) and the current Conservative government (The Lost Decade 2010-2020).

Polly will be talking about her latest book, An Uneasy Inheritance: My Family and Other Radicals, a story of comfortable lives lived with uncomfortable consciences by well-heeled liberals and leftists struggling, often comically, to make the world a better place amid much social guilt. This is also the shocking story of how Britain’s social mobility has gone into reverse, so birth is destiny more, not less, than it was.

This event takes place in Christ Church, tickets are available via Eventbrite – please use link below or via the library during library opening hours (cash only please) or on a Wednesday morning from 10.30 until 12.30 (or until 4pm on Wednesday matinee days).  On a Wednesday, card payments can be taken.
