This talk examines not only their friendship and camaraderie, but their rivalries in love and art, exploring what they had in common but what made them very different – and quite extraordinary - painters.
Professor Paul Gough is a painter, author and broadcaster, who has exhibited his art globally. He has written books and research papers on the representation of conflict, remembrance and commemoration, and cultural memory. In addition to books on Stanley Spencer, John and Paul Nash, he publishes and broadcasts on the street artist Banksy. He is Vice-Chancellor of Arts University Bournemouth, and an artist-academician and former chair of the Board at the Royal West of England Academy. His latest book is Brothers in Art: Gilbert and Stanley Spencer.
