A few decades later the industry had become little more than a rough folk craft, eclipsed by Japanese artists who had themselves been influenced by these Chinese innovations. Focusing on the extraordinary works produced at the cultured canal city of Suzhou, David Leffman explores Chinese woodblock printing at its peak, and proposes various reasons for its rapid decline.
David Leffman, author of Paper Horses: Traditional Woodblock Prints of Gods from Northern China, is a travel writer who first visited China in 1985 and picked up Chinese woodblock prints, of door gods and the demon catcher Zhong Kui, at a New Year's market at Guangzhou in 1995. He has been an avid collector ever since.
